The empathetic side of Kenyan soldiers on a security mission in the troubled Democratic Republic of Congo shone on Thursday after they helped a helpless expectant woman deliver her baby.
The troops under the East African Community Regional Force (EACRF) offered her medical aid after she asked for help as the soldiers were on patrol in Kibumba.
"She was transported to the Kinyaruchinya Health Centre where she had a successful delivery," KDF said in a statement dispatched on Friday.
"The troops later assisted her back home and offered foodstuffs to the family, who appreciated the support from the troops," the statement added. The security situation in DRC particularly in North Kivu remains fragile amid sustained efforts by regional leaders for cessation of hostilities between rebel groups and government forces.
Kenya has so far deployed two contingents of troops under the regional bloc being part of around 1,000soldiers approved by Parliament for the peace mission.
The EACRF said it continues to enhance the protection of civilians and open up the Main Supply Routes for the free flow of people and humanitarian aid.
